LavenderSage Art Retreat 2017

Here's a short VIDEO of my recent LavenderSage Art Retreat in Taos, New Mexico.

Yoga Poses in Public Places ~ Mabel Dodge Luhan Inn, Taos, New Mexico
Five hundred years ago, the large petroglyph rock (on my right) that marks one border of the courtyard of Mabel Dodge Luhan house, was placed there by the Tiwa Indians to help anchor the energy of the Pueblo Mountain. The rock has had an additional function over these years, as a navigational guide for extraterrestrial visitors because the site marks the entranceway to other dimensions.

Next year's LavenderSage Art Retreat will be August 19-26, 2018. Interested? Sign up here to find out when registration opens.

Sketching and Watercolor: Journal Style ONLINE class open for registration

$125.00 USD 6 week online class  Perfect for beginners! or as a refresher course!

Classroom will open on October 1 and
the first lesson will be released Friday, October 6, 2017.

Be inspired to record your life, a special trip, or your daily adventures in a loose, quick journal style format. Jane who is known for her friendly, encouraging teaching style, will teach drawing and watercolors using a straight-forward, intuitive approach. You’ll draw what you see, capturing the details of everyday objects and the small details of life on watercolor pages. Everyone has their own drawing style, just like handwriting, and Jane will help you to see and then record what you see on paper. The class is geared for beginners, but all levels are welcome.
(Really, even if you haven’t drawn since 3rd grade, I can teach you!)

Jane will help you compose your journal pages, and show you a number of other creative ways to enhance your pages. Each week you'll receive an email with a link to new lesson, with a different subject or technique. The lessons are available 24/7 and you'll receive a downloadable step-by-step pdf to work from each week. There are videos and examples from Jane's sketchbook to support the lessons. Just like in a real classroom, you'll be able to see fellow students sketchbook pages and will be able to comment and praise their work and they'll be able to see your pages too (as long as you post them!). And you'll get honest and gentle critiques on all your work from Jane. (The step by step pdf lessons are yours to keep and the classroom will close 3 weeks after the last lesson is released.)

You'll receive the complete list of materials (with links and descriptions) when you sign up. Basically we'll be using 5x7 inch watercolor paper, watercolors, a watercolor brush (I recommend the Niji Waterbrush), and a permanent ink pen, pencil and eraser. Don't buy the stuff until you get the actual materials list.

I love being a student! workshop with Bhavna Mehta

VIDEO of the book I made

I was privileged to take a one day workshop with Bhavna Mehta recently. She lives in San Diego, but does teach around the US sometimes. She's a gifted paper cutter and fine and creative artist. Not to mention, a first class human. (Do look at her website)
Bhavna's book
The workshop was from 10-3 and limited to six people. We each cut and then exchanged pages and then created our own copy of a collaborative book.

It's simple amazing what one can do with just an x-acto knife and paper!

A little handmade book.

My Garden (accordion book) by Jane LaFazio (cover size 6 x 4 inches)

I forgot how fun it is to just randomly cut words and short phrases from a book, and then compile them into a sort of a poem.

San Diego ~ one day workshop September 9

Saturday, September 9, 2017

The Value of Drawing ~ one day workshop
With Jane LaFazio
10AM-4PM  $125

in San Diego
Art on 30th
4434 30th Street
San Diego, CA 92116

Drawing with just a pencil and eraser is so simple and satisfying. It takes the fear out of drawing (I promise!) and you can do it anywhere with basic, inexpensive tools. In this world of mixed media, art can be a never-ending series of layers and color and more layers. Let’s go back to the basics with just a pencil and focus on drawing and shading to capture the contours and dimension of an object. But, let’s do it sketchbook style, meaning relatively quickly and as another tool for your art journal

Join me for a FUN one day workshop, where we will draw from real life objects, learn to see the darks and lights and really work on shading and dimension. I’ll also show you how to add color to your pencil sketches with watercolor. And, we’ll do it all in an accordion book you make yourself in class.
